Project Management with Asana

Project Management with Asana

We've been meaning to share the changes in how we get and stay organized for a while now, since switching away from Wunderlist years ago. Sharing the organization for our move from Alameda to Portland seemed to be the perfect way to do it (check out the calendar spread below).

Tyler and I each have our own personal projects for tasks we don’t need help accomplishing, in addition to projects for Sunny’s care (meal and medicine reminders), meal planning (which has been abandoned since we found AnyList), home maintenance (taking out recycling, watering plants, etc.), life goals, and El’s care (helpful during the newborn/new parent phase).

For this temporary moving project, we gave it its own space, named it “Moving to Portland” and dumped all the tasks we could think of that needed to get done for the move into one place. Once I had a decently sized list of tasks, I started down the list to assign a date to get each one done, sometimes adding additional tasks that were needed in order to get the task done more completely and notes with contact information where relevant.

With the calendar view, we were able to move things around so we didn’t have too many tasks to accomplish in any one day and to visualize just how much time we had left! Through this process, Tyler actually found that this view is best for him with his day-to-day tasks as well, allowing him to focus on a single day at a time, while I prefer a view of upcoming items as well, in order to get work done ahead of time when I have the benefit of a good work day.

If you too would like to try something new in order to get organized, I highly recommend checking out Asana (we use the Basic setup).  Once you're set up, you could try the Getting Things Done (GTD) method with a brain dump, added info and dates (even if it's just when you want to decide on a future completion date), and any other organization needed. Additional projects and views can be tested as you go.

Good luck!
